Originally, the primitive Roman calendar was divided in only 10 months. Numa Pompilius was the second king of Rome, who adapted the calendar to the solar year and added the two months remaining.
JANUARY. This was the first month added. Its ancient name was Ianuro, in honor of the god Iano, who was the protector of doors and entrances. To this divinity it was represented with a stick and a key.
FEBRUARY. Incorporated in second place by Numa Pompilius, dedicated it to Pluto or Februo, so that he appeased their anger.
MARCH. Comes from Mars, god of war, because in this month the military campaigns began.
APRIL. Afros comes from the Greek term which means foam, which arose Venus. It was dedicated to fertility.
MAY. It is a tribute to the elderly or protectors of the people, since it derives from the Latin word majorum, which means higher. Others attribute its name to the goddess Maya, the wife of Vulcan.
JUNE. Depicted as a harvester hay, it is a tribute to the young, because it comes from the Latin word junior.
JULY. Julius Caesar gave his name, since he was born in this month. Because it was the time that was carried out harvesting wheat, it is represented by a reaper practicing this farm work.
AUGUST. Pays tribute to Emperor Augustus. Initially it consisted of 30 days and was called Sextilis; Numa Pompilius took one day and Julius Caesar added 2 more.
SEPTEMBER. As the top ranked seventh (septem in Latin), he retained its original name despite being the ninth. Vintage represent different scenes this month, dedicated to the god Vulcan.
OCTOBER. In this case, it has also retained its original name from the time of Romulus, the Latin term october: eighth. Both vintage and sowing tasks of marking time, served to symbolize.
NOVEMBER. While his name has endured since he ranked ninth (november), their days were unchanged until Augustus, who left them in 30.
DECEMBER. Despite being in last place, still it is known by the original tenth.
